Briefing note: Antimicrobial resistance: An emerging water, sanitation and hygiene issue
In May 2015, WHO launched the Global action plan on antimicrobial resistance. Antimicrobial-resistant bacteria and their antimicrobial resistance genes are common and widespread contaminants fecal wastes and water. Understanding and addressing the role of water and waste in combatting antimicrobial resistance is an important element of the Global Action Plan. This briefing note provides an overview of WASH and antimicrobial resistance and proposes new directions for risk assessment management, policy and research.
